Elena Galli Giallini has completed the architectural interior design of Sino Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu retail arcade in the city’s prosperous Jinjiang district. Elena Galli Giallini Ltd is commissioned in partnership with Spawton Architecture by Swire Properties and Sino-Ocean Land to work on the 18,000 square metre project which includes a basement mall, all the vertical circulation spaces and the public facilities over three underground storeys. The space forms the major high street retail element on the below ground level of Sino Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu, Chengdu’s newest and hottest shopping and cultural hub that is centred around the ancient Buddhist Daci Temple first built in 618AD.

Above ground, the development integrates modern architecture with heritage ancient buildings and creates a retail network that sprawls along lanes, courtyards and plazas. Below ground, a much more fluid and organic space allows Elena Galli Giallini to explore her design themes - the juxtapositions of old and new, heritage and nature, place and history. With the intention of breaking the formulaic mould that shapes many shopping malls in China, the designer aims to create an environment which relates precisely to the place’s local spirit, its genius loci.

The design takes inspiration from the underground world of Chinese landscape, and symbolism of rocks and caves with their complex system of “worlds within worlds”. Elena Galli Giallini also takes reference from the natural landscape of stone forests, such as Shilin in Yunnan. The terrain features a labyrinth of giant lime-stones, like an enormous forest filled with unique stone columns. The retail arcade expresses the tectonic concept consistently with geometric, sharp lines and angular shapes in the design, materials, finishing and detailing everywhere.

A highlight of the mall is the escalator lobbies. These metaphorical caves each carry their own unique rock formations, made from 20 different types of pre-fabricated panels filled with granite and lava-stone rods. The ceiling of the arcade is adorned with fissures, holes and protrusions that incorporate lighting and interchangeable signage systems. To complement the tectonic scheme, Elena Galli Giallini adopts certain industrial elements in the detailing of the mall. Grey steel and naturally burnished copper are consistently used to highlight key features such as the split rectangular door handles and the lift car.

Original, unique and refreshing, Elena Galli Giallini’s design of the Sino Ocean Taikoo Li Chengdu retail arcade explores the dichotomy above and below ground - between modern and traditional architecture, lane-driven and fluid space, natural and man-made materials. The end product is one with a strong identity that complements the heritage buildings and the majestic Daci Temple above.
