Zona Tortona: new technologies in a safe eco system

Zona Tortona: new technologies in a safe eco system

A journey through the streets of Zona Tortona among the excellence and innovations of design from all over the world: a mix of sensory experiences and new technologies, with an eye always carefully open on the sustainability topics. The innovative processes and materials much more simplify the “home made” production. Also the “handmade” design gains a prominent position at the Fuorisalone, thanks to the determination and the ambition of the large number of young people who endeavor to improve their work and to always take it to a higher level.

As soon as I arrive in Via Tortona the attention is captured by a young Startup, Overdrive, born last year at the “Salone del Mobile”, which deals with the production of 100% handmade skateboards customized with peculiar graphics, backpacks and hats, never neglecting the aspect of eco sustainability. Since the objects are handmade, they are unique and exclusive, and this increases their value. The attention to eco sustainability emerges through the materials, in particular eco-leather used for the backpack, and the complete absence of toxic emissions as a result of the use of the skateboards.

We find Eco-leather as a dominant material also in the objects produced by “IF BAGS”, a startup founded in 2010 by three young girls, Isa, Claudia and Francesca. The peculiarity of their products can be found in their simple lines yet enhanced by the choice of bright colors: you can choose between 21 colors and combine them as you want. Even the strings are available in several colors; funny the idea of the package that contains the strings, which represents a man whose beard is made from the same strings. On their site www.ifbags.it it is possible to choose the combinations of colors of the desired products easily from home.

Walking down via Tortona I come across the exhibition of “Parrot”, which strikes me for the variety of drones controlled by iPad. However, my attention is captured mainly from the new item presented, the 2.0 Zik headphones, qualified as the most advanced headphones in the world. Here too, the material proposed for the coating is a type of synthetic leather of excellent quality. The special feature of the headphones is the possibility of using an app from Parrot that allows you to equalize the sound and to control the volume of music just by moving your finger directly on the auricle thanks to a touch panel. The headphones are provided with a wireless and Bluetooth device so that they can be connected to smartphones, tablets and I-Pods. They also offer an excellent feeling of smoothness at the touch. They are available are in 6 different colors.

Again in the field of thechology, noteworthy is the construction proposed by Asus for the presentation of the new Zenfon 2, which offeres a suggestive sensory experience thanks to a dark room where there were beams of water lit up by white light, which had different motions influenced by musical rhythm.

In the field of motoring, in via Tortona 32 we find a company that rarely disappoints, Lexus. In occasion of the presentation of the prototype of the new Lexus LF-SA, they created a fantastic environment around the car, with circular mirrors that create a game of light and unexpected reflections that give you a sense of movement.

The French designer Philippe Nigro has designed for this exhibition, called “A Journey of the Senses”, three thematic are as which involve all 5 senses, in collaboration with the famous cook Haiime Yoneda for the stimulation of the sense of taste. This journey has been invented in order to involve all the senses and so that the visitors themselves can take part in the pleasant driving experience. All the rooms simulate the feeling of driving a Lexus: the first room expresses the feeling of a rainy day, the second room is designed as the inside of a tree, the last one symbolizes the feeling of welcome with the screening of different foods from all over the world.

In the last room of the journey there’s an area dedicated to the 11 finalists and the 2 (Italian) winners of the Lexus Design Award 2015. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the project by the Japanese designer Hiroyuki Morita called “Embodiment of Fractal” that is to reuse the waste material resulting from deforestation in order to create furniture that stimulates the senses of sight and touch through natural forms and materials.

Another project that caught my attention is the one by Naoki Kaminaka and Ryo Yamaguchi that through the study of the unconscious have invented a system that modify how pedestrians cross the streets, in order to make the crossing less confusing.

Back to the field of technology, one of the tools that is gaining more and more importance and credibility for the homemade production is the 3D printer. In fact, several are the booths where objects printed with this technique are exposed, as well as many are the exhibitions that advertise these 3D printers themselves.

An emblematic case is represented by “FORMALIZED”, a workshop in Milan, 100% Italian, composed by three young designers who use 3D printing to create ambitious projects such as the creation of lamps using a plastic material: the ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene styrene).

An important stop in Via Tortona is without any doubt “France Design”, with two exhibitions inside the former Ansaldo Design center, presenting 14 prototypes created by 12 emerging designers for the first part, whereas instead the second is devoted to objects already existing but with an ability to create an added value through design in terms of functionality, aesthetics and emotionality.

“Le Lhenry”, the project by IN’ BÔ, is one of the products of the 14 emerging designers; it is a Fixie bike with a frame made entirely of bamboo fiber and flax. The particular material allows an excellent absorption of vibrations and guarantees a good grip on asphalt and unparalleled comfort.

The project signed Normal Studio by Jean and Françoise Dingjian and Eloi Chafaï instead, that goes under the name “Atmosphère”, belongs to the second part of the exhibition. This project takes the home comfort to a whole new level thanks to devices capable of producing energy, regulate temperature, absorb sounds.

At this year’s Fuorisalone the Supertudio Group has decided to celebrate its 15th anniversary with a 10.000 m2 exhibition characterized by a mix of art and technology. Thus it inaugurates a new format: SuperDesign Show. It is a building divided in different thematic areas: a Temporary Museum with pieces of arts from all over the world, especially from the Middle East, furniture for children, an area for innovative materials and much more. Inaugura così un nuovo format: SuperDesign Show.

It is to be noted how once again an other seat made of eco-leather re-occurs; I dare say that the attention to the ecosystem has become a constant element in the design.

No one can deny that the popularity of 3D printers is exponentially increasing; an evident example of this phenomenon is Maison 2013, a company from Treviso which creates jewelry using a 3D printer Sharebot (thi printer is produced in the Brianza area).

This booth helps us realize that the production of objects with 3D printers goes well far beyond the creation for entertainment; in fact these tools allow the freedom of creation, giving life to what can be considered the evolution of the craftmanship, a digital form of craftsmanship. The material used for some pieces of jewelry assumes considerable importance: the PLA, a derivative from corn starch, which makes all 100% sustainable with excellent results from the qualitative point of view.

The exposure of Peugeot Italy amazes visitors of all ages, with special attention to the design and style of everyday life. A project also in the name of culinary experimentation: in fact outside the exposure the new Foodtruck doesn’t go unnoniticed. A means of entertainment that combines the culinary experience thanks to a mobile kitchen and a professional coffee machine.

Also Peugeot, as well as Lexus and Asus, offers to all visitors a unique sensory atmosphere, with a master playing the fabulous Peugeot piano in a white and minimalist environment in contrast with a meadow of blue lights that moves to the rhythm of music.

Finally, wandering around Via Tortona, I come across a particular little booth that offers a funny way of recycling the cutlery by reusing it after benting or "easing" it as rings or earrings. The persistent trend, from large companies to startups, is to create new products causing the least possible impact on both the environment and human health.
