Ventura Lambrate and Zona Tortona: design trends an insights of Fuorisalone 2015

A glance at the new trends of Fuorisalone, especially those in Via Ventura and Via Tortona areas. Colours, materials, sensorial experiences and innovation are the key words of the projects driven by an army of young people, by design academies of all over the world, but also by new characters, which decided to deal with design for the first time showing outstanding projects.

Design categories and combinations of materials, techniques and colors are endless. Ventura Lambrate moreover combines designers and visitors (“Unite and Connect”, is the exposition main theme), offering an innovative and interactive experience in project observing. “Breaking The Mold” is the first exposition I decide to visit: it is a project by a Dutch Fund (Creative Industries Fund NL, www.creativeindustriesfund.nl) exposing functional sculptures in thermoplastic material whose molding process captures the human interaction.

The artisanship and manual processes prevail among the expositions, but always combined with innovative techniques. The international lighting company Castellani & Smith proposes for Fuorisalone the “Casa della Luce” (in eng. “House of Light”).

I walk through an embellished house with suggestive, warm and cozy lights and artistic installations composed by accurate hand-garnished materials, related to natural elements like water, vapor and fire.

About the theme of handmade and approaching to the Expo, we have to talk about food. The Fuorisalone trend are Food Trucks, minivans or Ape cars carrying alternative “from farm to fork” foods and beverages at affordable prices. There is design even in those little trucks that definitely tempts consumers to buy the products (which are tasty too).

I move to Via Tortona, another project and fresh ideas container. In the first courtyard I visit color is definitely the main theme.

I quickly reach the Overdrive stand (https://www.facebook.com/Overdrive.Italy). 100% handmade products and a live performance during which some incredible artists draw and paint on skateboards. Backpacks are as interesting as skateboards; they are handmade too, showing cool graphics that keep up with the times. Mi butto verso lo stand della Overdrive (https://www.facebook.com/Overdrive.Italy).

IF simil leather backpacks (www.ifbags.it/) attract me in the same way. They are an example of how Made in Italy products can always stand out in the crowd. There are infinite combinations of colors, ropes and tips.

Technology is another element that is required for those occasions: here startups and big companies show their progress. A little drone flied above my head, then I see Parrot store (www.parrot.com). A young woman inside was piloting with her iPad the flying robot which was filming me with its integrated camera.

Asus design presents in Via Tortona 20 “Zensation, Experience the Pulse” to promote the new Zenfone 2. Lightened waterfalls flow and move to the bit of the music in a total black room.

It is Lexus time. Lexus considers itself a brand that offers a truth delight of driving. It invites you to try a unique sensorial experience. In the first zone, the prototype of the new Lexus LF-SA, surrounded by mirrors that generates reflections and unexpected light games.

In the next area, there are three scenes: the first one emulate a rainy day; the second one dives you into a tree; the last one represents the symbol of hospitality. Through suggestive images and tasting of strange foods, Lexus aim is to imitate the feeling of guiding their cars.

Hyundai shows its project too at Superstudio Più of Via Tortona 27. Sculpture in Motion 2.0 is a huge installation that perpetually moves thanks to two mechanical wheels. The soundtrack was developed in-house by Hyundai Research Lab.

From cars to materials, at Superstudio Più there is the Materials Village, an area composed by different stands that presents products made with the most innovative materials.

XL Extralight (www.xlextralight.com/) is one example: expanded material produced by Finproject Spa labs for many different industrial products. Also IVANKA, leading designer concrete brand (ivanka.hu/news/the_sound_of_textures), presents an interactive installation. Every time you touch the concrete, a melody is produced. The aim should be to combine the different sounds in order to create the symphony of concrete.

In front of IVANKA exposition, the Polish designer and artist Izabela Boloz presents “Intersections”, a system of modular elements, good places to sit as well as place for play. Here form and color meet and interweave, like two combs.

Colors melt in the Tolix stand too, which shows unique models of designers from all over the wolrd, for the 80th anniversary of Chaise A. I colori si fondono anche nello stand della Tolix che, per gli 80 anni della Chaise A, propone modelli unici di designers provenienti da tutto il mondo.

Almost at the end of my path, in another courtyard of via Tortona, a huge sofa totally covered by real soil and grass. Do not sit.

However, if you want, you can sit around little trees on this bench/picnic table wooden system.

Finally yet importantly, I suggest following the progresses of this Startup, which I think could quickly develop in the next times. Its name is “Myhoming” (www.myhoming.it/) and, just for now, it covers only Milan’s area. It is a web platform that catalogues and collaborate with new services (shops, bars, restaurants, etc.) in order to offer a better life experience to the citizens.
