How to Write a Successful Competition Brief

How to Write a Successful Competition Brief

The brief of a design competition is one of the most important and relevant part of its organization. This article discusses how to write a superior brief for a successful competition organization.

Proto-Organization refers to the prior design of the organization itself: These are several steps that should be taken care of before a design brief could be prepared. The most important decisions to be taken before competition organization are 1. Goal Clarification, 2. Budget Allocation, 3. Time & Date Setup, 4. Defining Vision, Mission and Action, 5. Writing the Terms & Conditions, 6. Clarifying the Evaluation Methodology and 7. Choosing an Organization Platform. Once the proto-organization is done, the brief could be constructed.
The success of a design competition depends very much on the quality of the competition brief. The brief for the competition should be as clear and as complete as possible, yet there are certain organizational elements that are not necessary required to be given in the brief. These elements are anything that would confuse the participants (such as the conflicting mission statements of the competition and the organizers), and any information that is not required.
A superior brief must be a short and concise statement regarding what the organizer expects from the designer through the competition. However since usually the competition organizers want to communicate the message clearly, the brief could become necessary long and non-functional, therefore an abstract of the brief could be provided for the designers who would otherwise skip or skim the longer version.
For creativity and innovation, the tone of the brief should be supportive and provide inspiration to the designers; it must be aspiring and motivating. A good brief sparkles imagination, a bad one, motivates designers to think within a box.
Yet, in some cases you might need designers to think within the box especially if the initial reason was to collect feasible ideas ready for realization, so the correct brief depends on the initial goals for the competition. The best competition brief is not necessary the most aspiring brief; it is the one that helps designer submit projects that organizers were expecting to have.
It should be noted that Terms and Agreements, Eligibility Conditions, Prizes, Submission Guidelines, Evaluation Methodology, The Jury, are all important aspects of a design competition that should be communicated to designers, but their combination does not make the brief. The brief is what the organizers expect from the designers in a few words.
